I suppose so. I guess people would expect to see a Van Helsing type in this movie. I just thought it was funny that Dr. Sievers points out that van Franz has been discredited as an alchemy/occult enthusiast. Then van Franz keeps screwing up.

"Oops, I was going to kill Orlok, but I killed the real estate guy we were looking for -- oh well, let's look through his stuff -- hey, here's the Necronimicon. Quick, check the floor for weird incantation circles. Look here. I just found exactly the right passage in the real estate guy's book. Aha. This explains everything."

And then ten minutes later he's throwing up his hands, saying he doesn't know what to do, but then later he does know that Ellen has to sacrifice herself and that's the only way to defeat Orlok. I kept trying to figure out why they would plot things like this. I just decided to let it go because everything else was so well done and, you know, I'd probably missed something. Well, at least they left out the usual hilarious transfusion scene.

I think my favorite Van Helsing was Peter Cushing in the 1958 Hammer version of Dracula. He was sensible, competent, even more compelling than Christoper Lee's cipher of a vampire.

I misspelled Orlok and Dafoe. I will send myself to bed without supper.
