RE: God of War Ragnarök
Trading Kratos in for a five-foot girl would easily make this the game of the decade.
Okay, I would say I've finished the game, but there's so much content that I will never collect everything or complete every errand. I did finish the main story, and I must revise a couple of things.
1. The kid never got beyond simply awful, although he is involved in a spectacular bar fight in Asgard, which is one of the greatest things I've ever seen in a vidya game, so there's that.
2. The combat remained hyper-fiddly, but I got some cool armor and the best weapon ever -- a super spear made by a creepy mermaid. The spear hides inside a ring that Kratos wears and materializes when needed.
3. Freya (whom they correctly refer to as Frigg during the last quarter of the game) gets somewhat more bearable and actually becomes pretty great near the end. She's still rubbish as a fighting companion, which is really aggravating when you recall how easily she could kick your ass as an enemy.
4. I have to say that the last third of GoWR turns into one of the greatest stories I've ever encountered in any form - game, movie, book, whatever. It is truly an epic adventure with surprising turns, hard lessons, and mature characterization.
5. The music absolutely dumps on every other soundtrack in every other game. As an example from the climax when Kratos uses Gjallarhorn to signal the beginning of Ragnarök:

It has its faults and annoyances, but on the whole GoWR does one of the best jobs I've ever seen of elevating games to the level of genuine spectacle.
