All I know is that the first movie and the three sequels are excellent - no drop off in quality. I haven't seen the fourth film, which is supposed to be a prequel explaining the origins of Hitokiri Battosai's mad dog reputation and his marriage to Tomoe. Tomoe herself is introduced in the third sequel, along with her brother Yukishiro Enishi, a really scary villain.
The charm of the series, to me, is found in Kenshin/Battosai's relationships with the little group he befriends whose members orbit around Miss Kaoru and her "fencing school." Kaoru is consistently wonderful in spite of always being kidnapped by the bad guys. She nonetheless transcends her Princess Peach status by believably embodying the slogan of her school and living the "authentic heart" way.
It's a great series.
