By your description, it seems the rest of the live action films follow the plot of the anime series closely but without the dreadful filler the former is infamous for. I watched the original series decades ago, so much of it is forgotten but the one thing I remember is "boy, this thing sure has a lot of filler episodes." A condensed version of it sounds like a fine way to experience this story for the first time.
The fourth film sounds like an adaptation of Trust & Betrayal, as that is also a prequel to the original story depicting Kenshin's time as a hitokiri during the violent Meiji revolution. Tomoe's tragic revenge/romance arc is also present in it.
The characters were for sure a strong point, I always liked Hajime's villain turned reluctant ally turned valued friend arc. Surely completely fabricated compared to the exploits of the real life Hajime Saito, but what's a little creative liberty in the name of good drama.
