The definitions over some of these terms have changed over the last ten years. Arguments over what is truly an AI or AGI is the low hanging fruit of the discussion.
Right now there is a global arms race occurring over this technology. Commercial models are generating code, replacing debuggers, and are increasingly getting better, but still struggle with legacy code that has gone through years of evolution over best-practices and design patterns. Security focused models that are being developed right now have the potential to blow a gaping hole through infrastructure at some point in the future, and if a global incident occurs because of war or whatever, the solution to that is a pure generative model where every aspect of your "computer" becomes a generated output, and you no longer have "software". This is what Elon is referring to when he talks about engineering jobs going away, and proof of concepts of this have already existed for a while like GameNGen.
I'm not necessarily saying this is what will happen, but this is what is currently being planned out by glownigger corpos like Palantir and the current tech oligarchy.
