RE: More impressions of Star Wars Outlaws
Ooooh. An Imperial Agent story. Am interested.
Final sum-up of Outlaws:
I finished the main story, which was pretty predictable. The main character, however, does something VERY scoundrel-like with the disputed McGuffin at the very end, which I loved. There's also a cool credits-interruption cinematic that really seals her identity as a smarty-rogue.
The ending was very big and full of SW pyrotechnics. SW nerds will go out of their minds if they make it that far.
For me, the highlight of the game was reaching maximum standing with all four criminal factions simultaneously. The only reason I wanted my reputation to get to this point was to acquire every faction's best outfit. I am very pleased to have ended things on a fashionable note.
However, any major side quest I undertook after reaching this point could only damage my perfect status with everyone, so I decided not to continue. I don't think I missed much, as every side quest always took the form of stealing something, hacking something, or smuggling something. If you're looking for Witcher 3 level side quests, they aren't here.
Space combat was not especially enjoyable. Your ship is not very maneuverable, and it takes forever to upgrade the hull, shields, and weapons. A crucial, battle-changing loop maneuver is almost impossible to get until the end of the game, and by that time I didn't really want to do any more space missions.
One of the best things in the game is your pet. I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, it really is very effective. You can get it to attack or distract enemies while you do something else. You can also make it set off explosive items or sabotage alarms. Crucially, while you can't steal anything in a faction's stronghold unless you have excellent standing, you can have the nick everything with impunity. On the other hand, I hate the pet's design. I think it's supposed to be a cute merchandizing thing, intended to be converted into plush toys, PEZ dispensers, and the like, but it's really a vile, saccharin little rat monstrosity reminiscent of Ewoks and Tribbles. If you didn't need it, you'd kill it as a health hazard.
There's more, but that's far enough. I still don't think the game deserves the media clowning it got. You can see that Massive/Ubisoft really put the man hours and money into it, and it has a good deal of wit and spectacle. It also has quite a bit of clunk and repetition, as well as that nauseating little rat you can't live with and can't live without. I think it's a solid 7/10. Fin.
