RE: More impressions of Star Wars Outlaws
By popular demand, I submit my final impressions of AC Origins:
It has its flaws: movement is often clunky; the cinematics are rough; some abilities should not be in the skill tree but given by default instead; activities are repetitive and rather dumb (every other side quest requires you to rescue someone -- not only rescue them but carry them over your shoulder to a place of safety); the naval combat segments are annoying and don't fit with the other events at all -- they're like the car races in the Mafia games.
On the plus side, the world is enormous and really well crafted. The attention to detail and historical accuracy is stupefying. The music is grand and always apropos for the context. The horse riding is the best I've seen since Mount & Blade. I can see why many players consider Origins the best of the big open-world AC games.
HOWEVER . . .
Ubi completely ruins the entire experience by forcing you to play as Bayek's (the main character) wife. I have nothing against the character herself, but she has none of the skills, weapons, or other upgrades you've spent the entire game acquiring for Bayek. You go from a level 39 Bayek with legendary gear to a level 34 wife with a Walmart loadout, and you're up against the hardest boss in the game. I just stopped because I could not see a reason for this ridiculous downgrade other than shoehorning in a "strong woman" who might get a spinoff game. She was okay. I had no problem with her as a personality. It was the downgrade I could figure out. Why not just shift Bayek's gear over to her? Why not at least upgrade her level to match Bayek's? It was stupid. It was lazy. It was hardship for the sake of hardship and some kind of girl boss statement that simply didn't land.
Good game - terrible ending. 8/10
