Yeah I used TEN IIRC for doom and mechwarrior 2. It was more a BBS or Tinder for MP. It was hella expensive though: I used Philadelphia servers but I was 10 mins out in NJ which meant a long distance call. Then again, some towns touching mine were long-distance and the various zip codes in Phila city-county were long distance between each other. My GF lived one block to the right of broad street and I had a place one block to the left and it was a long distance call. Also, she could get cable in her building but I could not. Cable and pets were the two primary renter questions. If you didn't have cable, you got no TV because the signal would never be better than snow.
