RE: They weren't kidding when they said
I have never played a single competitive multiplayer Starcraft match for exactly the same reason, and I don't plan on playing a single one on Starcraft 2 either. Maybe some skirmish games against the AI with friends but that's it.
In the normal difficulty setting, the only mission that gave me trouble was the very last one, and even then once you play it and know what will happen, it becomes much easier the second time around. The game overall is easier than SC1 and much, much easier than Brood War. As an example of this: There's this one particular special mission where the final primary objective is to allow the Zerg to overrun and destroy your base and all of your units, I had some trouble completing this objective as my base's static defenses and units were so well positioned that the final Zerg rushes were just getting stopped dead in their tracks before doing any real damage. I actually left the game running, went out to get some milk and Dr. Pepper, stopped halfway home to chat with a neighbor for a bit, finally made it back home and the Zerg were *still* getting slaughtered. I had only lost a single flyer unit that probably strayed away from the main group while auto attacking and got himself shot down. For that day, I was Alexander, the Zerg are no Alexander! I'm the best ever! My defense is impregnable, my style was impetuous and I want to eat their zerglings, praise be the Xel'naga!
Coincidentally (HAR!) I also want Diablo 3 to be a prettier "more of the same" version of the original, there's something about the Diablo formula that just works.
