Subject: RE: morrowind...

In other games, lore is like decoration. It's decals applied after everything else is done. (Now obviously this is not always the case -- see the better D&D games.) In Morrowind, the lore is inextricable; it's woven into everything, especially the main plot. You have to know who the Tribunal members are to understand why you're going after Dagoth-Ur and why you're having problems with the Temple. Vivec (the guy, not the town) will eventually insist on your knowing all this. Caius will expect you to find crucial lore for your/his investigation into the reality of the Nerevarine. Other characters will do something similar. The main plot will make no sense unless you fully understand the history/religion/politics of various factions -- the Temple, the great Houses, what happened at Red Mountain, etc. Morrowind is lore. Fortunately, it's interesting, unlike the crap kiddie tacked-on pseudo-lore of something like the Warcraft franchise.
