Dante liked to promote the idea that virtuous Florentines were descended from the Trojans. This is why Achean heroes like Odyesseus (D. uses his Latin name Ulysses) don't fare very well in the Inferno. Also, in legend, the Etruscan city of Fiesole had taken sides with Catiline against Julius Caesar, who set up Florence and populated it with both Romans and Fiesolans. The city was long troubled by brawling between the Roman and Fiesolan Florentines. The former were in the minority but were aristocracy. Dante liked to think he was genetically tied to this group.
