Subject: I saw Robin Hood

That is, the new Ridley Scott version. Cate Blanchett made the movie. Max von Sydow gave his best performance in the last 220 years. Otherwise, it was pretty meh.

Russell Crowe was merely okay, as were the other principals. The King John character was especially silly.

I didn't mind the lack of swashbuckling or the heavy emphasis on battles. The problem was that the battles were boring. They had no energy or drama -- they were just big messes with too many money shots of Russell on horseback catching a weapon some guy magically perceived he needed. Basically, they took the better Gladiator shots and recycled them, only this time they came off rather awkwardly.

I thought it was sort of neat when Cate Blanchett showed up at the big beach battle on horseback and disguised in Walter's armor. I could forgive the blatant ripoff of the Éowyn disguise idea from Lord of the Rings. Unfortunately, Cate didn't get to do much except get knocked on her ass by the bad guy, which enabled Russell to emit a slow-motion "NOOOOOooooo" right before he charged over and saved her. Well, "saved her" is a bit misplaced because while Russell was clashing with the bad guy and preparing his 88th money shot involving an impossible arrow trick, Cate was thrashing around in the English Channel, trying not to drown in about two feet of water. LOLOL.

Yeah, it was not so good.
