It does, actually. You learn that he was an engineer on another crusade.
It also explains why the queen killed her son. In the theatrical, it comes off like she's power hungry, but in the extended, he develops leprosy. After knowing what it did to Baldwin, she killed him out of mercy.
The extended is actually a really good movie. Also it has more Saladin. Quality exponentially increases in proportion to his screen time.
