Actually, friendly fire is both a cause and an effect. Imagine two half-circles, each terminating with an arrow pointing to a state. One arrow points down to "friendly fire" on the right side and the other arrow points up to "teammates shooting each other" on the left. It's a cycle, like how magnets are used to power a motor.
