It seems to me that since the infected are victims of a highly mutated and unnaturally rapid "evolution," they wouldn't yet have the instinctive code telling them to conserve their food supply. Nor could they develop this, since they have mostly transformed from food supply to predator. The game tells us that the predators far, far outnumber the prey. If a typical campaign level is any indication, they outnumber the prey by hundreds to one -- conservatively dozens to one. Can this work? Not in nature. Not on this planet.
So yes, the infected would be dying by the thousands, and rapidly. All the survivors would have to do is find somewhere to hole up long enough.
