I know the whole coma thing has been done. I think it works (even if it is ripped off) in terms of introducing the character and viewers to a zombie infested world that already exists, so that we're more or less experiencing it for the first time but not the first phases of it.
The alternative option would have been to waste 3 episodes showing how the breakout happened and how it slowly progressed.
