vodka makes the world of difference depending on quality. Try a bottle of Grand Traverse Vodka. It has zero bite and doesn't linger (something I only like with whiskey). A bit peppery, and quite possible to drink straight. If you're going to mix it, I'd only do it with Bloody Mary.
But yeah, whiskey was meant to drink straight. There's a difference between having friends over, being dipshits, and making mixed drinks than if you just want to have a quiet night making one or two straight drinks on the rocks.
Since Ol' George isn't distributed yet I'll have to find something else. Vodka straight is a bit harsh no matter how smooth... probably more of a shot drink no matter what the quality. Whiskey I could actually enjoy if I sipped, given that it's not awful.
