Next time we fire up L4D2, go to Start, click Run..., type in perfmon /res, click the Disk tab and leave that running, *then* start L4D2.
Run the game in windowed mode, whenever the game begins getting choppy, switch back to the resource monitor window and look in the "Processes with Disk Activity" windows, whatever is at the top is probably what's causing it.
