Always wear the right rubbers..
So I thought I was going to go to a party tonight (don't ask me why it's on a Sunday). I backed up out of my driveway and found that that was as far as I was going to go. The rain turned snow from last night left a nice sheet of ice under the layer of snow. The combination of rear wheel drive, and rock hard summer tires ensured that my car lacked any semblance of grip. Rocking the car back and forth switching from forwards to reverse in quick succession did nothing but randomly change the direction I was pointing. After some shoveling, and cat litter dispensing, I managed to somehow get back in my driveway. Just 15 minutes later, a snow plow truck came through. Now where is that damn pizza delivery driver?
The real lesson here is to make sure you have the right tires on your car. I've been procrastinating on getting winter tires for over two months now - and today reaffirmed why. In most cases, a 2wd car with winter tires will perform better in the snow than an awd car with all season tires. They really do make a significant difference. If you do look into buying some, always consider looking on craigslist where (at least around here) you can find plenty of good deals for cheap - oh, and since it's christmas season, it's probably the best time to look. Just a little PSA.
