With lots of stuff now unstalled, and in shutting things like ICQ (yes, I still use that), framerates were still suboptimal. So I went into the settings to see if there was anything else I could tweek, and I saw that, for whatever reason, multithreading was turned off. So, I turned it back on, and except when completely overrun by the horde things are much much better.
Strange things, computers.
