The most common way to get logged by using bittorrent to download the latest edition of Trucks, Tits and Trannies is by a group tasked with catching the pesky, pesky pirates who will use the torrents themselves to log IP addresses, this is done by seeding the download themselves and collecting every single peer who tries to download the torrent.
There are many options, you can use proxies to mask your IP but this commonly affects download speeds, you can use blacklists to keep away from compromised torrents but these by design will be out of date all the time, you can join private trackers that are closed off to the public and by extension the anti piracy groups but getting invited to one can prove difficult.
Or your mate could stop being a dummy and get his ass on usenet like everybody else.
