a low end atom will struggle with hd rendering, but that's what the ion2 is for. If you're doing software rendering, you'll run into skipping issues when you get random services spiking the cpu. most htpc software supports hardware rendering with the ion2, including ubuntu. The main problem with using a normal desktop in an htpc is noise from cpu fan, psu fan and the harddrives.
