That's pretty much it exactly, only instead of donating our time and effort it's considered "on call time" which is "unpaid" because we are "exempt salaried employees" even though the hospital's own on-call policy does not allow for unpaid on-call time. There's a tiny loophole that says that a position must be approved for on-call time by the department VP in order to be paid for on-call, so we just aren't "approved", just expected to do it.
Really, it's pretty swell.
