The Poseidon Adventure is a lesson in how not to make a disaster movie, or any movie for that matter. Every performance is unadulterated ham. Every character is insufferable. Every actor is miscast. Every time any of them says anything, it's like a variation on the ways fingernails can be dragged across a blackboard.
Hackman's radical preacher is a braying idiot who rarely makes consistent sense. Everybody else is just a placeholder or mouthpiece for some tedious eccentricity or "life position." The kid is so spunky and screechy that you want to drown him in a rain barrel. Borgnine and Stevens are just older versions of the kid. Red Buttons should never be cast in anything for any reason.
If all this isn't enough to convince you that The Poseidon Adventure trolls its audience mercilessly, all you have to do is recall poor Shelley Winters' insane underwater swimming scene. This may the be most embarrassing footage in cinematic history.
The Poseidon Adventure is what Ed Wood could have made if only he'd had enough venture capital.
