RE: Decided on replaying New Vegas...
L.A. Noire so far can be described as something that takes the whole of L.A. Confidential (Complete with Irish police captain and pro-wife beating partner), the "Choose your own adventure" bits from Heavy Rain, the evidence/accusation bits from Phoenix Wright, the logic based investigative bits from Condemned 2 and a somewhat dumbed down version of the shoot-y/drive-y bits from GTA4 complete with regenerating health and infinite ammo, other than the occasional car chase I get the sensation that they could have cut out the driving aspect completely and the game would have been just as well without it.
It does everything Rockstar is famous for correctly, namely they've got the whole 50s ambiance down pat and the much reported on facial animations actually live up to the hype (I don't recall ever seeing a video game that has the player decide whether the character he's talking to is lying by watching his face, even though the facial expressions can be blatantly obvious at times), the game definitely looks the part visually even though it tends to have some frame rate hiccups from time to time.
Other than that, yeah, it pretty much has zero replayability and holds your hand way too fucking much but I guess this is now typical in the console world, it's also unusually short for what is essentially an adventure game with a bunch of bolted on minigames.
