I had some strange urge to play AvP 2010 yesterday. I thought Steam might have snuck in a patch that nerfed the crushing boredom of the Marine campaign. I can report that this characteristic remains as potent as ever. Then I tried a few rounds of Survivor Mode, which in its own way is just as intensely boring as the Marine campaign.
The problem is the same one that helps to ruin Doom 3: darkness. You know, darkness in a video game isn't like real darkness, which has a lot of interesting ambient qualities that act on the imagination. No, darkness in a video game is just the absence of things on the screen. The flashlight in this context is extremely annoying. You just want to turn it off and take your chances in the absence of things on the screen.
