Usually, you disable the onboard graphics in BIOS. During restart, press the Del key or F10 or whatever your computer mfr says to do. Then look for an option to disable the graphics or turn off the shared memory for graphics. Once the new card is up and running, you should uninstall the old drivers if you find them in Control Panel/Programs and Features (Win 7). If you don't see them there, probably Windows installed their default ones, so don't worry about them unless you get errors.
Important: Be sure you have a way to restore the onboard graphics BEFORE you disable them in case something goes wrong. This will probably require some research.
Re: preference for AMD: nope; that AMD was just the first decent one I saw. If you prefer Nvidia, super. I personally think there's not a dime's worth of difference between them or their drivers. Most real problems arise with certain models designed by either company, or with silly things third-party companies change in the reference designs.
