You will almost certainly have to report for jury selection in a criminal trial. Civil trials are frequently settled just prior to jury selection. I always get criminal trials. Selection takes about two days. If you say something one or both lawyers consider problematic (an unusual aversion regarding car thieves, an uncertainty but a maybe sorta possibility that you might know the person on trial or the lawyers or some person central to the proceedings, etc.), they usually cut you loose. I'm not advocating doing something like this cynically. I'm just reporting what I've seen.
