Yes, that's exactly what I do with Jeremus.
Also find
Deshavi (points into scouting skills; make her a horseback archer)
Lezalit (points into training/engineering -- makes a good healer to supplement Jeremus -- yes, assign both of them to custom class; give Lezalit a light crossbow and let him fight every once in a while)
Katrin (points into trade -- all points into trade; this is all you need her for; doesn't matter if she gets knocked down in battle all the time)
All should be trained to at least 3 horseback, preferably 4. During down times, make a small group with you and companions and hunt bandits -- my group of five can kill 40 bandits at a time -- this is pro Warband.
