Just recently, someone asked me "how do you get into computers?" to which I responded "with a screwdriver". Its pretty distressing just how incompetent a large portion of people are in their respective fields, not to mention things that might be only slightly outside of them. At any rate, that's only of minimum importance. What is important is the right amount of ass kissery, and making it sound like you know what you're talking about to people who know even less than you do.
The GM thing doesn't surprise me. After all, have you driven their cars?
