One last bit: Because the real money auction house isn't online yet, the gold auction house is currently full of extremely good, but ludicrously expensive gear. I imagine this will change once the RMAH comes out, with all the very good gear being posted there exclusively and the gold auction house taking a backseat.
Blizzard wants this to happen of course, with the small cut they take from every transaction.
