There is a "shielded" affix, which is a timed shield effect which cycles with a cooldown, and there is an "invulnerable minions" affix, which means the minions do not ever lose their shield, but the elite usually has no shield. I do not recall having an elite with shielded invulnerable minions.
If you haven't turned on health bars at least, I recommend it.
