Diabrah 3 early assessment
It's not a bad game. It's certainly a AAA product and a pretty good updated Diablo 2 clone. It's just not as great as I expected it to be. It doesn't surpass D2 in any important way. D1 to D2 was Windows 3.1 to Windows 95. D2 to D3 is XP to Vista.
I can't help thinking how much greater D3 could have been without so much emphasis on the RMAH. This controls the game design from top to bottom. Many cynical and frankly insulting design decisions were made in accordance with this new prime directive: make the player spend real money and get a cut.
D2 was Blizzard North re-inventing Diablo. D3 is Activizzard turning the Diablo IP into an auction house percentage scheme where players become sharecroppers.
But then I ignore the RMAH and its influence as much as I can and still have a good time. It's just a pity that D3 could have been so much more.
