I think one thing that's going to help a lot is watching Kripparrian's wealth tips on youtube. The man is a genius. By watching only two of his videos, I learned the following:
1. It's effectively impossible to find a really good rare drop.
2. If I find one, I should hold on to it.
3. I should not try to hold on to gold because it will lose value.
4. Somehow, by holding on to these items that are impossible to find and spending gold, I will accumulate true wealth.
No wonder Kripparrian is the greatest financial genius in Diablo.
