How the game works:

1. As a war mage, you occupy a fortress (or mine at the beginning). You are the last line of defense preventing a horde of orcs and other monsters from taking over the world.

2. Monsters break into your fortress at one or more entrance points. You have to prevent them from reaching one or more rifts (magic portals to the world of humans).

3. You begin each level with a modest amount of gold with which to buy traps and/or weapons, trinkets, etc. You also are given a certain number of rift points. Every time a monster gets through a rift, you lose a rift point. You also lose points if you die, and some bigger monsters cost multiple rift points.

4. As long as you have one rift point remaining at the end of the level, you "win."

5. The game rewards you with skulls. These are used to upgrade your items or purchase new ones. The fewer rift points you lose, the more skulls you earn.

6. The game has a par time for finishing each level. If you don't lose any rift points but go over the par time, you get 4 skulls. If you stay under par time, you get 5 skulls.

So as you can see, getting fewer than 5 skulls is an indelible mark of shame which can lead to drug abuse and eventual suicide. Also, there is no crying in Orcs Must Die.
