Is gathering like crafting? Back when I played, my dwarf hunter got fairly competent at leather crafting. This was helpful for the guild I was in. Unfortunately, for some reason the game recommended that I join an Oceania server, so my guildmates were mostly gone when I was on.

Wait. That was my Tauren druid thing. My dwarf was on a U.S. server, but he never joined a guild. He also did leather but should have done mining.

I had an undead guy who didn't go very far. Whatever server he was on, the other players were uniformly creepy.

WoW in general was creepy. Also confusing. My favorite place was a dwarf city, the name of which I've forgotten. I liked hanging around near the bank and watching high-level players walk by with their pets. The place was like a mall with forges and whatnot. They should have made a dwarf food court.
