RE: I read The Road lately
Have you every read "A Prayer for Owen Meany" by John Irving? It starts off looking like a really unbearably twee coming of age in New England tale (like many/most of his works?) but then veers off in unanticipated directions. Its really satisfying and not really dark, but a bit melancholic at the end.
