RE: Orcs
XCOM is not that bad. It has old school style, but simpler. The pretty colors and animations distract from the dull turn-based gameplay.
My first game I fucked up everywhere and pretty quickly turned into a losing proposition. I restarted and played the meta game better, making better choices with regard to money and satellite management (save them for when a country is about to bail on you). I finished it with 100% satelite coverage and everyone at the lowest panic levels. While I reloaded a part a handful of times, I am not a manic reloader.
Do not play on anything higher than normal. You get one-shotted as it is, but the AI gets massive crit and to hit bonuses, so their lame pistols become sniper rifles and cover doesn't matter. This doesn't sound bad except that after a few levels, rookies are incapable of killing anything. And before that rookies are nearly of incapable of not dying.
I confess to having tried an xcom game for about 5 mins many years ago. I apologize in advance that I found it too dull to play through.
Also, complex inventory management for more than one character is a sure fire way to get me to stop playing. The new xcom does not have that.
