RE: What is wrong with you assholes?
So you're a packrat, sim?
I understand not spending money if you don't make enough to save. But it's good to be able to enjoy (and even appreciate) when you finally do splurge a little. Especially if it's something you will get use out of. There's no doubt you should be cautious with your purchasing, but you should also be weary of being overly cautious. I really do think an occasional vacation to somewhere other than home and relatives is good for everyone. Something to take your mind off the daily grind, and give you some new experiences (sights, sounds, smells, food, etc). Life is too precious to be cooped up in the same place forever.
As for owning your own living quarters, I think there are quite a few substantial benefits (of course, there are also a few pitfalls).
For instance, being able to enclose yourself in a comfortable surrounding that you can really enjoy. From wall color a flooring, to floor layout, and everything else you can practically customize when it's your own. It is expensive, but I personally think it's worth it. That's where you live. Why would you want to have a bunch of rooms with the same white walls like an insane asylum? If you can be content with that, then I truly say good for you. I long for a personalized nest that isn't generic.
Johnny - Saving up a ton of money to put down on a house isn't necessarily a good idea. The biggest reason being if you put down a lot of money, your payment will be lower, but if you lose your income, then even a low payment may be too much. With less money down, and more money in the bank, you have that buffer if the worst case scenario happens. Keep the money, and make larger payments if/when you can.
Also, there are so many places in decent areas going for $40k. Those equate to super low payments - lower than most shitty apartments. Prices probably won't go up anytime soon, but what if they do? Take advantage while the picking is good. There was a house down the street from where my sister lives, which is a pretty damn good area. The house needed only slight work, but it was a quad with over 2k sq ft. for $100k. I was really considering getting it (it's sold now). So there are deals out there. Yeah, if you buy a place now you will probably be unable to sell it for quite some time, but truth is, unless you gf is going to school for some highly demanded job, you won't be really be able to move anywhere anyways. And if the economy totally tanks, you won't be living anywhere.
