It helps, but I did this 31-wave without it. I might have gotten farther with it, though. What got me in the end was a big wave of ball and chains, armored ogres, and gnoll grenadiers, among other things.
In addition to the spring traps and void walls, I had a big killbox in that area just before the rift -- with lots of wall blades and ice.
