RE: Sim... Console Gaming is Dead.....
Yes, the main thing AAA console game developers are up against is variety. Everybody is making games now, for every platform and at every price, including "free." Why pay $60 for a console game that cost $100 million to make when you can buy a cute little pot boiler for your smartphone at a fraction of the cost?
Everybody thought indie games would save the PC. They're figuring out that very few indie games are worth their modest prices. For every Orcs Must Die or Mount & Blade, there are billions of crappy little retro feces, or some low-rent thing involving robots or the next unimaginative Minecraft conceit. Nobody wants this junk.
"Free" to Play is big right now, but people are going to get tired of how it's being mishandled. I predict that the publishers and indie deveopers who do F2P right will be the winners when the dust clears. The retro indie idiots will move back in with their parents.
Meanwhile, the $60 console extravaganza will survive just fine. How soon people forget that a new generation of consoles is right around the corner. Sony might be on the skids, but Microsoft will do what they always do -- smother everyone with millions of dollars until they get their way.
The PC port (the proper term) will be with us for a long, long time. I'm not too worried about it. Big-money ports have gotten better over the years. I'm pretty used to them now and don't think much about whether Skyrim has a console interface, etc. As long as they're not lazy hand-me-downs with bad checkpoint spacing, I'm fairly happy.
I would be happier if people were making big PC-dominant or PC-exclusive games, but only marginally. Besides, it will never happen again.
