The game has a dwarf cannon that will do that kind of thing to regular orcs. It stuns (and eventually kills) heavies, but it guzzles mana. It's more for pyrotechnics than anything else and is pretty worthless in later waves. The best weapon in the game will always be the crossbow/ice amulet combination. This gives you more bang for buck than anything if you can get headshots.
Spores might be good, but fragmented earth lords and little orcs use them up. In a map with a lot of floor space like Crossfire or Passages, they're okay. In a minecart map like Precipice, the tracks take up a lot of floor space. You'd probably wind up with a bunch of little orcs and earthlings wasting the spores while heavies overrun everything -- and there would be no slots or money for portals.
I didn't see the boom barrels getting thrown into space, but that's just one more hilarious gotcha in this insane game. Maybe the spring traps should only be placed in the forward area and on the ramps leading from the spawn points. Everything parallel to the boom barrels should be iced.
Ice + concussive damage = dooom.
