Painkiller: Hell and Damnation
(simulcast on MBM)
Hmm.
As you may know, this is supposed to be a remake of the original Painkiller using updated graphics (Unreal engine). The graphics are pretty good, but certain objects seem a little undercooked. The cutscenes are different -- and quite bad. I seem to recall the physics being a little more responsive in the original, but I may be imagining this.
I'm a little bugged by changes the developers made to the original secrets. Some are still intact. For instance, you still have to roll an explosive barrel over to a little structure and detonate it to get one of the items. But other things have changed. There's a holy item on top of one of the mausoleums in the original game. A lamp pole can be pushed over so that you can climb it to get to the item. In the new game, the poles aren't "physiced," so you have to find another barrel and asplode it to make it fall toward the item, which, by the way, has been moved to another location for no good reason. I don't think I was able to collect a single secret in this level. Well, maybe I should lrn2play.
I seem to recall getting the Painkiller weapon in the cemetery right off the bat, but in the new game you have to use the shotgun and sawblade weapon. The Painkiller weapon is there, but it's a secret. You have to waste a huge amount of ammunition to get to it. I think you get it by default in the next level anyway.
I really have no major complaints so far. I just wish they hadn't messed with things for the sake of messing with them.
