I never read the book but understand it's a series of stories/accounts as opposed to just one long narrative. I wish the movie would have followed that formula. It's not like the horror anthology format is completely dead. The V/H/S movies pull it off fairly well.
I'm sure, whatever the original plan, that it all went to shit as soon as Pitt signed. He probably wasn't coming along for the ride unless granted some level of creative freedom, and with a name like his - they were looking to fill seats with the top billed, not waste him on a mini-story. In fact, look at the actors in the movie. Aside from Brad Pitt, I don't think I recognized a single famous person. They literally blew the majority of their budget on him.
Ah well. To be fair, as far as horror movies go, it wasn't any better or worse than I would have expected. Definitely doesn't sound like it paid any homage to the source material though.
