This silliness reminds me of the time I did Big Valleys in nightmare.
Against all logic and tradition, I blocked off both rifts. Then I put an army of dwarves behind the barricades. To help the dwarves, I ran back and forth and shot at things. I don't remember what kind of magic I used.
Anyway, this was all I did, and I was shocked -- shocked, I tell you -- at how well it worked. I must have used some kind of disabling magic. Maybe I snuck in some other traps, like ice vents. I don't recall.
