Carmack is an interesting person. Other than a stint in reform school, he doesn't appear to have had any significant life problems. He does exactly what he wants to do every day, and, as far as I'm aware, has done so all his life.
He became rich at a very early age and appears never to have had money or career worries. He is completely free to go program all day, go off and "do research" on graphics, send rockets into space, drive Ferraris -- whatever.
Even Bill Gates worked like a slave as he was getting Microsoft off the ground. Steve Jobs and Michael Dell humiliated themselves selling computers out of their cars. Only Carmack has led this charmed, seemingly worry-free life. Very strange. There must be some reason.
