RE: Jury Duty Today
I am late reading this because I was so distracted by my fake tree emergency.
In Texas, you can be excused for various reasons, none of which make much sense. For instance, if you're a single mom with children a certain age, you can cry about how they'll be abducted by aliens if you're not there. You can be excused for a medical emergency, though the specifics are rather vague. You can be excused if you're over seventy. I'm at least six hundred years old, but I don't like to fall back on this. Next thing you know, I'll start getting junk mail from hearing aid companies and places that sell you those things you can hang around your neck and call an ambulance when you fall down.
My favorite excuse, though, is being a student. If you're enrolled in a school, you get to skate. If you're a teacher, you don't. Makes perfect sense.
During my voir dires, I'm usually one of about sixty potential jurors. One reason they call so many people is that about thirty percent of them don't show up. I guess they would rather pay the fine or risk jail time. Probably some small business owners regularly spend time in jail because it's less inconvenient than being on a jury. Just speculating here.
