We got back over...a lot...more than madcows this year, but only because the tax code is fucking stupid (Thanks Stevie!). My wife has a major scholarship from our research tricouncil, but new rules that came down last year states this is not income. 30K/year nontaxable. Whatever.
The result of this is I can claim her as a dependent, and she can transfer me various unused credits she has accumulated (credits are the same as pretax deductions. Sort of.) Add in gaming the system with respect to retirement savings and political contributions, and we make back more in the return than we put into the retirement account.
How can anyone run a country like this?
