The Stand is what happens when your editor at Doubleday can't talk you out of writing the War and Peace of schlock apocalyptic horror. It's terrible. It's worse than terrible because it goes on and on, crapping out an endless stream of unlikeable characters and embarrassing events. If you want a decent horror story, buy Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. It's much shorter and much, much better.
