RE: House of Leaves
I admit anything King has done in the last decade is probably best to avoid... but there was a time when he was fueled by alcohol and cocaine and churning out pretty good stuff for awhile.
I wish I had your ability to quit a book prior to starting a new one. In Cold Blood by Capote was one of those books that stick with you simply because it was a true story and as deranged as the characters were you still empathized with them - but towards the end I was ready to be done with it. It's not that the ending was bad, but the chapters prior to the end felt much more like filler that was only meant for you to spend more time with these characters and had no real purpose aside from that.
It took me 2 weeks to get through it even though it was a decent book because of this. That and I had snuck a read of the first chapter of Hitchhiker's Guide. Once I was finished with In Cold Blood I burned through Hitchhiker's in 3 days.
I should have also mentioned I also picked up Vonnugut's Welcome to the Monkey House, and though I'd argue this is probably the best introduction to his style, it wasn't really my cup of tea.
Lucky Jim and The World According to Garp are also two that I have my eye on once I get through the next batch.
